Kris ThomasAbout 80,000 people are bitten by snakes in Sri Lanka every year, with potential for up to 400 fatalities. Local treatment for snake bites currently depends on an antivenom produced by India — which isn’t always 100% effective, given the strength of Sri Lankan snake venom. However, Prof. Jayantha Rajapakse and his team at the University of Peradeniya have been developing their own antivenom, which may help reduce the number of snake bite fatalities.
