From Pottery To Beeralu: The Unseen People Behind Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry

By early 2023, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry had been through the mill; from the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent country lockdowns to the devastating economic crisis that followed, the magical island was struggling to hold its spot as a top tourist destination in South Asia.
Across international media, misinformation was rampant; tourists were unaware that the land known for its unwavering hospitality was safe, back in action, and ready to welcome guests once more. Tourism is a significant contributor to Sri Lanka’s economy. Sri Lanka was working overtime to revive its economy – and it needed its tourists back.
Leela has been learning the art of beeralu since she was 15 years old. For Chaminda, pottery is his father’s legacy. Meanwhile, Lasith’s income relies on his acquired skill of fishing. They all have one thing in common: they rely on tourism, and Sri Lanka’s tourism industry needs them.
We caught up with three small business owners whose livelihoods rely on tourism. Whilst showcasing their incredible skills, we captured their struggles, and their message to the world – Sri Lanka is safe.
