The Government recently announced its decision to create a new policy regarding Sri Lanka’s stray dogs, and Animal Welfare Organisations (AWOs) and animal lovers are not too happy about this for many reasons.
Last week we brought you a breakdown of the country’s current street dog situation, covering how it has been dealt with, some of its contributory factors, as well as local AWOs’ stance on the issue. Many questions seem to have arisen regarding the Government’s sudden decision to roll out a new policy. With the current CNVR system producing such viable results, what could a reassessment of the situation possibly hope to achieve? Wouldn’t it make more sense if the Government shifted focus to the factors that are actually hindering progress, like the dumping of unwanted puppies and unregulated breeding of pedigreed dogs?
