Musician Sunil Perera, best known as the frontman of baila band The Gypsies, passed away on 6 September at the age of 68 from complications related to COVID-19.
Tributes poured in for Perera following his death as he was remembered for the timeless music and memorable lyrics that quickly became a staple of Sri Lankan celebrations. A magnetic live performer, Perera was also noted for being a vocal supporter of democracy and social progress.
