10:00 Nearly 70 percent of all trips to and from Beijing, China’s main airport were cancelled as 106 new COVID-19 cases were reported this week. In just five days, Beijing has been beefing up its prevention measures to curb the spread of the virus and decided to raise the emergency response from Level III to Level II on Tuesday night.

The GCE Advanced Level examination has been postponed to 7 September and 2 October. The Grade Five scholarship exam will be on 13 September.

17:00 SriLankan Airlines has commenced offering outbound passage for travellers to London, Tokyo (Narita) Melbourne and Hong Kong which are supporting global lockdown ease. The flights to these areas will operate for both passengers and cargo.
16:00 Government has granted permission to buses (those attached to the Sri Lanka Transport Board, as well as privately owned) and train transportation to recommence tomorrow (13 May) under strict guidelines, in districts where curfew is lifted.

Addressing a press conference, the association claimed that four PCR tests carried out on 5 May on patients from Rajagiriya, Modara and Kolonnawa had been faulty.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, has tested positive for COVID-19. Trudeau’s office had earlier said that the Canadian first lady returned from a speaking engagement in Britain and had mild flu-like symptoms, including a low fever. Trudeau is in self-quarantine at home.
Schools in several European countries, including Ireland, Portugal, and Belgium, have shut due to the outbreak.
India has reported it’s first COVID-19 death; a 76-year-old man in the southern state of Karnataka.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that with effect from noon today (13), Electronic Travel Authorization on arrival for foreigners who hold ordinary passports will be temporarily suspended until further notice. Citizens of Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles will not be affected.
The CAA has announced that passengers from France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden & Austria will not be permitted to enter the country from 15th to 29th March. Israel and the Palestinian Authority have imposed a closure on Bethlehem and surrounding towns and villages, following the discovery of seven cases of COVID-19 in the Palestinian city. President Mahmoud Abbas also declared a state of emergency across the West Bank.

The first Sri Lankan COVID-19 patient has been reported from Italy, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said. The victim, a 46-year-old woman, reportedly from the Horana area, has been admitted to a hospital in Brescia, Italy. The Sri Lankan embassy in Italy says the woman is stable.
Lee Man-hee, the founder of the controversial Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has tested negative for COVID-19, after he was taken to a ‘drive-through’ test site. The church is at the centre of the outbreak in South Korea and has been heavily criticised over its response to the virus. Lee apologised and called the epidemic a “great calamity” but refused to be tested by public authorities until a local governor threatened to drag him by force to be tested.
Australia’s Attorney General Christian Porter has said the government will use its biosecurity law to restrict the movements of people suspected of having COVID-19. The government would use the law to either designate some places out of bounds or place a patient in detention at home.
WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom has said the world is in “uncharted territory” with COVID-19 because while the infection can spread through a community, it can also be contained.

The New England Journal of Medicine published its latest report on COVID-19, in which it extracted data regarding 1, 099 patients from 552 hospitals in 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in China. Main points of the study reported that the median age of the patients was 47 years and 41.9% of the patients were female; 5% were admitted to intensive care and 1.4% had died.
Indonesia reported its first case of COVID-19; President Joko Widodo said two Indonesians had tested positive for the infection, marking the first confirmed cases in the world’s fourth most populous country.

The Japanese Ministry of Health has discovered that 23 passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship were released after quarantine without being retested. The Ministry also confirmed that one of the ship’s passengers, a woman in her 60s from Japan, tested positive for COVID-19 after disembarking on February 19.
More than half of South Korea’s COVID-19 cases are linked to a branch of a controversial religious group Shincheonji, in the southern city of Daegu. At least 231 of the country’s 433 confirmed cases are associated with the religious group.

Kuwait’s civil aviation authority has decided to stop all flights to and from Iran amid fears of the COVID-19 outbreak. Kuwaiti nationals arriving from Iran will be subjected to quarantine and residents or those with entry permits who were in Iran in the past two weeks will be barred.

The first case of COVID-19 related death reported in Middle East. Iran’s health ministry says two people have died after preliminary tests came back as positive for the new coronavirus disease, COVID-19. They were the first two suspected cases of COVID-19 to be announced in Iran.
COVID-19 has now killed more than 2, 120 people, all but six of them in mainland China. It has infected more than 75, 000 people.
The passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan began disembarking after a 14-day quarantine. A total of 624 cases of the virus are linked to the ship, many of whom were released previously, having not shown symptoms.
The Chinese Government has revoked the press credentials of three Wall Street Journal reporters, due to an opinion piece that was published earlier this month, titled ‘China is the real sick man of Asia’. This is the largest such expulsion of overseas media from the country in recent years.

Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO chief, said data from China had helped form a “clearer picture of the outbreak” and that it appeared that four out of five people infected would recover.
“More than 80% of patients have mild disease and will recover, 14% have severe disease including pneumonia and shortness of breath, 5% have critical disease including respiratory failure, septic shock and multi-organ failure, and 2% of cases are fatal,. The risk of death increases the older you are,” he said.

Thousands of medical workers in Hong Kong have been on strike for five days, demanding the government close all borders with mainland China and take further emergency measures against the virus.

Schools in Shanghai have been forbidden to open before the end of February, in a government effort to contain the novel coronavirus.
In the United States, 350 American evacuees from Wuhan have been placed under quarantine at two military bases in California, Reuters reports. This is the second batch of evacuees from Wuhan.
The figure brings to nearly 400 the number of people subject to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s first public health quarantine in 50 years.

The Director-General of Health Dr Anil Jasinghe says the Chinese female was a tourist, who arrived in a group. She had developed the fever just before the group left Sri Lanka, which was when she was admitted to the IDH.
The first patient is reportedly a Chinese female who arrived in Sri Lanka from the Hubei Province, China and was admitted to the IDH with suspect 2019-nCoV. While initial tests had proven negative, further testing has proven positive with the virus.
