In recent years there has been a considerable increase in deforestation across the island. Simultaneously, however, there have also been tree-planting initiatives to offset the adverse environmental effects of deforestation. But, experts say tree-planting and reforestation efforts are unlikely to be able to compensate for the loss of forests and the vast biodiversity they foster.
With ongoing development projects reportedly breaching protected lands and the reversal of legislation enacted to protect these areas, will planting of new trees be enough?
