The Sri Lankan Grandmother Who Got Her Masters In Political Science At 87

“Do your degrees, not just for career’s sake – it should be something that should be life-changing. You should think, not about yourself all the time, but think of your country, think of the world.”

Varatha Shanmuganathan has become the oldest person to earn a master’s degree from York University in Canada, at the age of 87. Now, with a degree in political science, she plans to write a book about the ongoing processes of peace and reconciliation in postwar Sri Lanka.
